Learn More About Northern Building Supply Ltd
Northern Building Supply Ltd was established more than sixty years ago by Bert Thomas. He bought an old sawmill in the area and turned it into one of the city’s most unique, privately owned lumber yards. During the post-World War II boom, Bert evolved into a young entrepreneur. He bought other lumberyards and hauled lumber with his new business called “Northern Cartage” Today, the company is one of the largest, privately-held, single-location building supply outlets.
A Family-Owned Business
The company is a family-owned business in every sense of the word. After Bert's passing in 2010, his three sons Alex, Gord, and John, now overlook the day-to-day operations. Bert’s grandchildren, daughters-in-law, and other relations can also be found working here. Affectionately known as “Northern”, most of the company’s forty plus employees have worked here for more than twenty years.
Northern's complex is vast, which spans to a total area of 3.2 hectares. It is located just two blocks east of the Knight Street Bridge off Marine Drive. Bert, who had a keen eye for business, acquired the complex to provide a home for many smaller businesses.
